Hollo claims word championship at Microsoft's 2020 Imagine Cup
Hollo (Cyberport Creative Micro Fund grantee), which develops a comprehensive AI-powered personal health management solution, recently bested contestants from more than a hundred countries to claim the world championship at the Microsoft Imagine Cup. It was the first time that a Hong Kong team has won the award in the often called “Olympics of student technology competitions” in 18 years since the competition’s inception.

Improving the mental health of individuals by integrating machine learning with suggestive diagnosis, therapy, and continual monitoring, facilitating self-help and professional therapeutic services are Hollo’s key aims.  Its AI-powered platform cum web-app let users monitor and understand their own emotional and mental well-being through precise metrics. The web-app makes easy for medical professionals to monitor patients and intervene should it become necessary.  The solution well met the competition’s winning criteria of “accessibility, diversity and inclusion”.

Hollo’s app keeps track of behaviour such as eye movements (indicative of sleep quality), cheeks (indicative of heart rate and therefore stress level), and social media sentiments to offer users and their counsellors a more comprehensive understanding of mental health conditions. When the app detects a change in behaviour, it will first recommend simple actions, such as breathing and mindfulness exercises, after which it will, if necessary, prompt users to seek professional help or alert relevant NGOs to reach out.

Available in both Chinese and English, the app is undergoing internal testing with mental health NGOs, professionals, and users and is due for release in Q3 this year.

Hollo will receive US$100,000 in prize money, a mentoring session with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and US$50,000 in Azure grants to enable further solution development.
